Near Piazza del Duomo, facing north, is the old cemetery of Pisa, known as Camposanto Monumentale (translated in English "The monumental cemetery") or Camposanto Vecchio (translated in English "The old cemetery"). It is the cemetery of the religious complex from Piazza del Duomo, besides the cathedral - Duomo di Pisa, the baptistry - Battistero di San Giovanni and the bell tower (campanile in Italian) - Torre di Pisa. Camposanto Monumentale (translated in English "The monumental cemetery"). The enclosures and walls, dating from the 1270s, were built by Giovani di Simone, with the same types of galleries, columns and arches. It preserves old tombs with specific ancient Roman sarcophagi, illustrating the historical and artistic past of the area.
