Fontana del Moro, Piazza Navona

The Fontana del Moro is located at the south end of the Piazza Navona. The basin, the dolphin and the four Tritons, which are Greek gods of the sea, were sculpted by the Italian sculptor Giacomo della Porta in 1575. In 1673, at the request of Pope Innocent X, Bernini added a statue in the center, mistakenly called a Moor because of his appearance but actually meant to represent Neptune, standing in a shell and wrestling with the dolphin. The statues in Piazza Navona are replicas, and the originals were moved in 1874 in the Borghese gallery.
